On Monday 18th November TVC Account Manager, Clara Mantuani attended the Green Apple Awards at Kensington Palace with our client, Lee Duddy – Property Manager, to collect a silver International Green Apple Environment Award.

The team implemented a waste-focused strategy and significantly turned around the recycling efforts at TVC. The award was very well deserved and recognises the considerable amount of work put in by Clara and her team, alongside Sustainability Apprentice Daisy Bird and the waste management partner Grundon, who were appointed in December 2021.

Lee approached Clara in 2021, having identified that improvements were needed due to a lack of recycling. The reasons being there were too few recycling bins, not enough recycled waste collections, lack of awareness and knowledge amongst staff, and the paper towels being used on site weren’t recyclable.

In collaboration with Grundon, Clara, her team, Savills ESG team and Daisy they completely overturned all of those challenges and by June this year, the overall recycling for 2 Television Centre had increased from 29% since January 2022 to 60%.

Additionally, the team have achieved the following results:

  • Annual recycling has increased by 17.5% since 2022
  • General waste has been reduced by 60%
  • Mixed recycling increased from 18,958 kgs in 2022 to 36,030 kgs (in June 2024)
  • From January 2022 to June 2024; 195.29MWh power was generated via Energy from Waste (EfW) and 138,619 CO2 kgs/ 883 trees saved
  • Zero waste to landfill site

They’ve achieved this by implementing the following initiatives:

  • Waste awareness workshops for cleaning teams/occupiers and guides are now available in a range of languages
  • Waste events for tenants and the public
  • New picture-led waste signage around the estate/ 2TVC
  • Colour-coded bins to give clarity on what can and cannot be recycled
  • Itemised weighing scales to enable tracking of individual tenants’ waste
  • Food waste caddies in the kitchens
  • Coffee cup recycling bin in public area
  • Wood recycling skip
  • Tork recyclable paper towels
  • Regular waste audits and spot checks
  • Data is monitored and tracked against goals set by Savills, in accordance with the ESG strategy

The goal that the team and Grundon are now working to is to reach an overall recycling rate of 75% by the end of 2025.

A huge well done to Clara, Daisy, the TVC team and Grundon!
